“Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love endures forever.” — Psalm 136:1

Welcome New Vice Presidents

From Steve Larmey, senior vice president –

I have really good news to share. Twenty years ago, when Young Life began this move to reach and teach kids in Africa, the Lord gave us three promises that became our strong convictions:
1. Young Life was made for Africa.
2. The Holy Spirit would lead us and open doors in every country.
3. He would raise up African women and men in every country who would lead and carry out this mission at every level of leadership.
The Lord has kept and continues to keep these promises — the mission of Young Life, led by the Holy Spirit, is a powerful tool for the Kingdom. We are now in 26 countries. And our ministry to kids is led by courageous, faith-filled African volunteers, staff associates, area directors, regional directors and now vice presidents.
We have decided that in order to hear the Lord even better and reach and teach more kids across Africa, it is time to divide Sub-Sahara Africa into three geographies led by African vice presidents. Our new vice presidents are:
  1. Martin Wamalwa: vice president Africa East (includes current work in Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya).
  2. James Davis: vice president Africa West (includes current work in Sierra Leone, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, Senegal and Liberia).
  3. Alexis Kwamy: vice president Africa South (includes current work in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini and South Africa).
Alexis and James have been part of Young Life for 16 years and have been powerful volunteers, staff associates, area directors, regional directors and senior regional directors. Between the two of them they have begun work in nine different African countries. Martin was on Alexis’s first leadership tree and helped begin Young Life in Kenya along with Matilda Kiumba and James Mungai Kamau. He has led all of Africa and the Middle East as the divisional training director for the past six years, and he has done so while learning to live with the disabling effects of a stroke he suffered several years ago. Finally, as a Roman Catholic, Martin is well positioned to help in our ongoing dialogue and collaboration with the Catholic Church.
All of these men humbly and courageously listen to and obey the Lord and reproduce this in all those they serve and lead. These are the first-ever non-Americans in Young Life to be named to this position or higher from countries connected to the U.S.-based mission. (Canada, Brazil and Australia all have non-American leaders at this level and above.)
A few important things: North Africa and the Middle East will continue to be led by our leaders in place — Yousef Khalil, Hunter Lambeth and Dan Barnett.
And I will continue to lead our three vice presidents and our Middle East team.
Let’s rejoice. The real message is God moving and faithfully fulfilling His vision and promises. Thank you to the thousands of African volunteers and staff who have sacrificially and courageously helped us come to this point. And thank you to the regional teams, the friends and partners, and support staff who have held up their arms and supported them as they follow the leading of the Spirit.
We need this even more. Celebrate with us. And please join us in praying for these leaders as they serve their teams to reach and teach every kid in Africa and beyond.
