Burkina Faso summary

Burkina Faso, previously known as Upper Volta, was part of French West Africa from 1896 to 1960. It changed its name to Burkina Faso in 1984. A land-locked country, Burkina Faso shares borders with Mali, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire. The population is almost 21 million people, with 63% Muslim, 25% Christian, and African traditional religions.

Repeated military coups have been the norm for much of recent history. Churches and missions continue to bring the gospel to unreached people and groups in the country. Churches are being planted among ethnic groups.

Young Life came into the country to reach kids in 2021. In 2024, 194 leaders led 1,181 kids in clubs every week and 475 teenagers in discipleship groups. The ministry has 375 adult prayer partners.
