Jennifer Akurut – Uganda
Jennifer – Jenny – is a motivator, a team builder and one of the most loving people you’ll ever meet. She grew up in a polygamous Muslim family, and her father had seven wives and 46 children. But Jenny’s mother was a Christian and refused to convert, so her father divorced her mother when Jenny was only a toddler.
In 2005, Jenny joined Young Life, and experienced genuine love and community for the first time. She was drawn to Young Life by the games, songs and skits, but stayed because of the love she received. Jenny started reading the Bible, and was convinced of its truth. She began to study Christianity and converted to Christianity from Islam while in high school. Jenny even changed her name from Hadijah to Jennifer in order to symbolize her new life in Christ. She started Young Life in the Teso region of eastern Uganda. Here, Young Life exploded and many people from neighboring districts joined. But while her ministry was growing, her father found out that Jenny had converted to Christianity. He and her siblings chased her from their home, rejecting and disowning Jenny. Simon Okiria, Regional Director of Young Life in Uganda, gave her a place to stay. Now, Jenny is an area director in Mbale, Uganda and loves kids with the love of Christ.
