The colors used in the flag of Zambia are rich in symbolism: green stands for the nation’s lush flora, red for the nation’s struggle for freedom, black for the Zambian people and orange for the land’s natural resources and mineral wealth. In 1964, Zambia gained independence from Britain, and has struggled to develop a consistent political system. Zambia is said to have over 70 languages, and nearly 70 different ethnicities are represented in its poor and young population. Zambia is made up of mostly Protestants and Roman Catholics. There is a 15% unemployment rate, and 60.5% of the population was below the poverty line as of 2010. 53% of the population is under the age of 18.
Young Life launched in Zambia in 2013. In April of 2016, Young Life Africa held its first ever camp in Zambia. Area Director Banji Simasiku and her team welcomed 100 kids who experienced the best time of their lives and heard the life-changing story of Jesus Christ. Associate Regional Director Nkosi Sampindi bussed up to camp with a team from Zimbabwe to do program, speaking and work crew. Martin Wamalwa, Kenya regional director, helped Banji train and organize the camp. This was an all-Africa effort and is the culmination of four years of God’s work. The result--all 100 kids said “yes” to Jesus! These kids returned home with their leaders and began discipleship training, beginning their Christian walk.
