DRC summary

The Democratic Republic of the Congo was established as a Belgian colony in 1908 and gained its independence in 1960. It became the official “Democratic Republic of the Congo” in 1997 and is still full of significant political tension and strife. From 1994 to 2003, more than five million people died as a result of civil war, and many eastern areas are still plagued by violence as various rebel groups continue to operate there. DRC is the poorest country in the world and is still experiencing the effects of constant militant-led conflicts, widespread rape, exploitation and corrupt government. DRC is made up of almost 90 million people and over 200 African ethnic groups. 48% of the population is under 18 years of age. The main language is French, yet Lingala is a commonly used trade language as well. Nearly 80-90% of the population is Christian--split up between Catholicism, Protestantism and other Christian denominations.

Since 2008, we’ve developed the ministries of Young Life, WyldLife, Capernaum, Young Life University and YoungLives. We have reached an amazing number of kids with the help of a strong team of volunteer leaders. The strength of our leadership is sacrifice; a team ready to sacrifice their own lives to seek and bring kids to Jesus Christ. The security situation in the DRC does not always allow us to openly practice our faith within Young Life so we desperately need prayer.

Prayer Opportunities

Pray that God will help us to develop Young Life ministry in other provinces and areas.

Pray that God continues to strengthen the leaders and area directors around our region. That we may serve Him by bringing the lost souls of kids to Christ daily.

Pray for the upcoming elections in Congo. The political situation is not good at all. The president and his collaborators do not like to leave. We want God to help us pass the elections in peace.

After the death of Tecson Ekyamba, the former area director of Fizi area, John Peter Venance has replaced him. John is sick and has been in the hospital a long time. This situation causes the ministry to struggle. We really need your prayers for John and that area.

Pray that God protects our ministry, families, leaders, kids and country.

Pray for the 10 DGL students to grow in their leadership and love of Jesus.
